Direct Simulations of Interface Dynamics: Linking Capillary Pressure, Interfacial Area and Surface Energy

چکیده
We perform direct numerical simulations of drainage by solving NavierStokes equations in the pore space and employing the Volume Of Fluid (VOF) method to track the evolution of the fluid-fluid interface. After demonstrating that the method is able to deal with large viscosity contrasts and to model the transition from stable flow to viscous fingering, we focus on the definition of macroscopic capillary pressure. When the fluids are at rest, the difference between inlet and outlet pressures and the difference between the intrinsic phase average pressure coincide with the capillary pressure. However, when the fluids are in motion these quantities are dominated by viscous forces. In this case, only a definition based on the variation of the interfacial energy provides an accurate measure of the macroscopic capillary pressure and allows separating the viscous from the capillary pressure components.

A molecular dynamics study of the force between planar substrates due to capillary bridges.
Molecular dynamics simulations are used to study capillary liquid bridges between two planar substrates and the origin, strength and range of the resulting force between them. Pairwise interactions are described by the Lennard-Jones potential. Surface wettability is tuned by varying the fluid-substrate well depth interaction parameter. The force between the substrates due to a bridge of liquid ...

As a physiochemical property, asphaltenes are known to be one the most surface active compounds in crude oil. Due to such property, their behavior is most probably influenced by fluid-fluid interactions at the contact surface (interface). Potentially and naturally, in most cases, water is in contact with crude oil and is co-produced with it as well. Considering that asphaltene molecules are pol...

Designing numerical methods for incompressible fluid flow involving moving interfaces, for example, in the computational modeling of bubble dynamics, swimming organisms, or surface waves, presents challenges due to the coupling of interfacial forces with incompressibility constraints. A class of methods, denoted interfacial gauge methods, is introduced for computing solutions to the correspondi...

A novel test-area (TA) technique for the direct simulation of the interfacial tension of systems interacting through arbitrary intermolecular potentials is presented in this paper. The most commonly used method invokes the mechanical relation for the interfacial tension in terms of the tangential and normal components of the pressure tensor relative to the interface (the relation of Kirkwood an...
